TRC-20 USDT Fee: Tron Network Cost Breakdown
The TRC-20 network is the most popular choice for USDT transfers due to its low fees and fast confirmation times. Here is everything you need to know.
How TRC-20 USDT Fees Work
Unlike Ethereum's gas model, Tron uses two resources: Energy and Bandwidth. Sending USDT on TRC-20 primarily consumes Energy. If you do not have sufficient Energy in your account, TRX is burned to cover the cost.
TRC-20 Fee Amounts (2025 Updated)
- First transfer to an empty wallet: Requires ~130,000 Energy units. At current rates after Proposal #104, this costs approximately 13.14 TRX (~$1.92 at $0.146/TRX).
- Transfer to a wallet that already holds USDT: Requires ~65,000 Energy units, costing approximately 6.57 TRX (~$0.96).
- With energy rental: Using services like TronSave, you can reduce costs to as little as 4.66 TRX (~$0.68) for non-empty wallet transfers — a saving of up to 63%.
Proposal #104: The August 2025 Fee Reduction
In August 2025, Tron's governance passed Proposal #104, which reduced the energy unit price from 210 sun to 100 sun. This effectively halved the TRX required for USDT transfers. The sender now pays 6.4 TRX for non-empty wallets and 13.4 TRX for first-time transfers — both significant reductions from the previous 13.4 TRX and 27.25 TRX respectively.
Tip: Check Recipient Wallet Before Sending
You can check whether a recipient's wallet already holds USDT by looking it up on Tronscan before sending. If the wallet is non-empty, you will pay the lower fee. Sending during off-peak hours can also reduce costs by an additional 20–30%.
